Diagnostic Insights
Certain combinations or ratios of LFT results can provide deeper insights into potential conditions. Click on each card below to learn more about these common diagnostic patterns and what they might suggest.
Indicators of Liver Damage
A rise in certain enzymes often points to hepatocellular injury.
Elevated ALT (SGPT) & AST (SGOT): These are primary markers for liver cell damage. When liver cells are injured, these enzymes leak into the bloodstream.
Elevated ALP & GGT: These often suggest issues with the bile ducts (cholestasis), but can also be elevated in liver damage.
Reduced Synthetic Function
The liver produces key proteins. A decline can signal a problem.
Low Albumin: Albumin is a major protein made by the liver. Chronically low levels can indicate reduced liver function over time.
High Bilirubin: The liver processes bilirubin. A buildup can indicate the liver is not clearing it effectively, which can be a sign of reduced function or a blockage.
ALT:AST Ratio
The ratio between these two enzymes can be a diagnostic clue.
ALP Rise & Normal GGT
Distinguishing between liver and bone sources for high ALP.
Common Causes of Raised ALT / AST
Elevated levels of the enzymes ALT and AST are common indicators of liver distress. The following are some of the frequent underlying causes for these increases.
AFLD
(Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease)
NAFLD
(Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease)
Viral Hepatitis
(e.g., Hepatitis B, C)
Drug Toxicity
(Medication-induced)
Autoimmune Hepatitis
(Body attacks liver)
